New taxes on homes if Labor re-elected?
Premier Andrews has made election promises to spend billions of dollars that can’t be paid for without huge tax increases. However, Mr Andrews is still refusing to reveal what taxes he will increase to pay for his promises if he is re-elected.
One option disclosed in government documents is to impose new special charges on anyone living near a public transport or road improvement. For example, this could include new charges on anyone living near central Box Hill.
Another option is to impose new taxes more widely, for example an annual tax on homes worth more than a certain value, or a taxes on the estates of people who die.
Before the 2014 election, Mr Andrews promised there would be no new or increased taxes, and then he broke that promise with 12 new or increased taxes. This time, Mr Andrews must tell the truth about what taxes he will increase if he is re-elected.
