Big pay rises make building more expensive
It was reported last week that the Andrews government has forced Metro, the operator of Melbourne’s train services, to give big pay rises to workers on level crossing removal projects.
The workers have received a 14 per cent pay rise over four years, with an extra 3 per cent increase if their roster changes. Workers will also receive a wide range of paid leave, including to attend major sporting events.
These big pay rises are likely to lead to higher wages for workers on other infrastructure projects, making building and construction in Victoria even more expensive.
The Andrews government forced Metro to give these big pay rises after the unions threatened strikes that could have delayed the level crossing removal project.
The government should be standing up for the interests of the whole community, with fair and reasonable pay rises instead giving the unions whatever they want if they threaten strikes or disruption.
